Employment Opportunities while in New Zealand

Students doing a course lasting more than six months are eligible to work part-time but certain restrictions apply and you can work under certain conditions:

During term-time, you can work no more than 20 hours per week (BUT you can work longer if the work placement is an essential part of your course - e.g. the work period of a sandwich course - OR if you are on a degree course and the work placement is an internship lasting no more than three months)

You can do full-time short-term work during the holidays

You cannot run your own business, be self-employed, or work as a professional sports person or entertainer

You cannot take up a permanent full-time position Even if you are a given 'restriction on working' (i.e.) allowed to work part-time, you cannot include your earnings as evidence of your ability to support yourself financially. Please note that part time jobs should not be considered as a main source of income for funding your studies. There are two exceptions to this rule:

If you will be attending a publicly funded college or university and the institution guarantees that it will employ you and can provide details of your pay

If you will be attending a sandwich course at a publicly funded college or university and the institution guarantees that there will be a job for you and can provide details of your pay then you can include these earnings as evidence of your ability to support yourself.

Please note that part time jobs should not be considered as a main source of income for funding your studies.

How much can I earn when I work in New Zealand?

Those students who are able to work under their visa will probably work in casual jobs either tutoring at their institution or working in restaurants or other service industries. The normal hourly wage rate will be from NZ$8.00 - NZ$15.00 per hour and you will have tax deducted from your wages before you receive your payment. On these amounts the tax will normally work out at about 20 cents per $ and you should be able to obtain a full tax refund at the end of the financial year in April.
