Students doing a course lasting more than six months are eligible to
work part-time but certain restrictions apply and you can work under
certain conditions:
During
term-time, you can work no more than 20 hours per week (BUT you can
work longer if the work placement is an essential part of your
course - e.g. the work period of a sandwich course - OR if you are
on a degree course and the work placement is an internship lasting
no more than three months)
You
can do full-time short-term work during the holidays
You
cannot run your own business, be self-employed, or work as a
professional sports person or entertainer
You
cannot take up a permanent full-time position
Even if you are a given 'restriction on working' (i.e.) allowed to
work part-time, you cannot include your earnings as evidence of your
ability to support yourself financially. Please note that part time
jobs should not be considered as a main source of income for funding
your studies.
There are two exceptions to this rule:
If
you will be attending a publicly funded college or university and
the institution guarantees that it will employ you and can provide
details of your pay
If
you will be attending a sandwich course at a publicly funded college
or university and the institution guarantees that there will be a
job for you and can provide details of your pay then you can include
these earnings as evidence of your ability to support yourself.
